Question DetailsAsked on 4/28/2014

Is tree service taxable? I had Steiner's Saw Service here today.

When I presented the 10% Angie's List Discount coupon he replied he hadn't charged me any tax and that would offset the 10% discount. The Bill was $1423. Also relooked at his information on Angie's List and he lists a 15% discount for seniors. I'm 71, does that count?
I know since I didn't know the senior discount before hand it's on me. Just would be good business on his part to have let me know that...

Assuming you mean Steiner's Saw Service in Texas, then yes tax should have been charged - 6.25% plus anything your locality adds on. That would have been less than your 10% coupon, so he stiffed you by about 3.75% - or about $53. It would have been nice if he had given you the 15% instead, which would have cut your cost by around $125 even if he had charged tax.

Unfortunately, if you did not ask for the senior citizen discount up front, legally it is too late to try to enforce it now - though yes, would have been nice if he had offerred it. Guess he figured you were pretty young looking for your age.

I would ask for the difference - the $125 and see what he says - he might come throguh with the $53, or might figure you are about to turn him in for tax evasion and give you the $125.

I won't ask WHAT the service was - that is a pretty big bill for a tree trimming or cutting service, unless he took down several large trees or trimmed a whole bunch of them, totaling a coupleof days work.

If I were you, I would do a review on AL too.
