So sounds like you want to convert this to a porch - so need roof and the supporting structure - and consider at same time if you want to enclose it - entirely with windows, screened, or maybe just awnings - so even if you do not do that part right now, the support framing is there for it later on.

Generally, unless the deck foundations were designed with a roof in the plans, you will need separate foundations for the roof - which assuming a wood deck is not a bad thing because it makes it easier to replace the deck (totally or partly) in the future if needed if the roof is not supported off the deck framing.

Be sure to pay close attention to where the water will flow - both at the roofing interfaces, and as it comes off the roof - so you don't get water in under the roofing, ice damming, or pooling by the foundation. Also, if in snow country, be sure the structural engineer designing it pays attention to snow drifting potential, because added-on porch roofs like this are commonly underdesigned or just hung off the existing roof, resulting in overloading and failures in severe winters (especially in spring with rain on snowpack).

Since you said gabled roof sounds like you already know about the problems of extending a sloping roof further but flatter over a porch - but here is another similar question addressing that yesterday FYI -

Porch and Deck Contractor would be the normal Search the List category for this - also most General Contractors will do it.
