New to the list and disappointed

I'm fairly new to Angie's List. When I first heard about the list, I was impressed with the whole concept. With all the problems people have with dishonest contractors these days, I decided to join the list. But I have to say that I've been a bit disappointed. It seems to take forever for submitted reports to be posted. Also, I've been reading some of the posts about Angie's List asking contractors for money -- contractors who contribute $$ to Angie's List getting preferential treatment and so forth. I hope these are just rumors, but if these things are true, I doubt I'll continue using the list. I'd appreciate hearing back from anyone who might be able to shed some light on these rumors.

Dear Sammy,

I saw your post this afternoon and wanted to respond to you right away in case you're checking back in over the weekend.

I work at Angie's List and will be able to check into your concern about delayed posting of your reports when I get in on Monday morning. In the meantime, though, I wanted to respond to your question about these rumors.

Highly rated service companies are invited to advertise with Angie's List, but they are under no obligation to do so. If they choose to advertise, they are required to first achieve and then maintain an overall grade of a B or higher, and they must also offer a coupon to our members. If their overall grade falls below a B, they are not allowed to advertise. And yes, we keep careful track of this.

As a member, you should have received our monthly magazine. If you flip to the back of it, you'll see the coupons in the back section -- those are the ads. You can see the online ones as well when you check the list online. When you check the list, you will see a toggle switch that allows you to see companies that offer coupons first. You can turn that function off and see the companies listed without regard to whether they offer coupons or not. Many of our members like the coupons because they use them to save money on services they need.

Companies cannot pay to be on the list -- only members can add companies. It's only after companies have been placed on the list and after they've earned and maintained an A or B that they are eligible to offer coupons.

I hope this answers your concern, Sammy. While I think I've explained the process, please check out our FAQs tab to see the practice explained there, too. I'll check in again on Monday.

Have a great weekend.

Thank you so much for your response. I feel reassured now. I have a company doing an enormous amount of work for me and I have been extremely impressed with the quality of their work (and I'm not easily impressed.) They are a small company and I would like to let people know that there is a company in this area that they can trust to do a great job at a fair price.

I realize now that you do have a report drive going on and maybe that explains the delay in posting reports. Thank you for taking the time to clear this up for me.

I did a bit of checking this morning, and I believe your report is up. It generally takes us a day or so to get the reports posted after members submit them because it takes us a little while to read each and every report before we post it to the List. We read them all to ensure they adhere to our guidelines. During exceptionally busy times, like the annual report drive, we get a little backed up in that data integrity process. But I think if you look, you'll find your report is out there for your fellow members to see.

Thanks! Have a great week.
