Pfister retainer sleeve too big for old Pfister adapter nut ....HELP

Hello

I hope I am using the right terms. My home was built in 2005. I am replacing the old Pfister tub faucets (handles). I am just replacing the trim. I have removed the old trim. I put the new face place up and then the new retainer sleeve, that is suppose to screw onto the old adapter nut ( I think it's called), but it is way too big.

I stayed with the same brand because I was told swapping them out would be easier.

Is there some kind of threaded loop I could add to it to make it "fatter"?

Thank you
