Question DetailsAsked on 11/18/2014

Price for R22 refrigerant.

I had 5.5 pounds of R22 added to my AC/Heating unit. There was a leak in the outdoor unit. The technician repaired the leak. It was free of charge due to the fact it only needed a brass screw near the top of the unit. I paid $600 for the R22. My question is was I overcharged or does this sound like a going rate now?

There are a number of prior responses about R22 costs in the Home > HVAC link in Browse Projects, at lower left.

Prices vary widely these days, and there is also some real price gouging going on with this because of the R22 phase-out - you can buy R22 for about $25-40 in bulk tanks though I heard one HVAC contractor complaining about paying $60/lb in tanks, and people are being charged anywhere from reasonable prices about $50 or even less at times, to well over $100/lb. With a typical recharge labor charge of maybe $100-150, or perhaps as much as that much more if the system was flushed also, then in your case it looks like you maybe got charged somewhere between $50-90/lb - so could have been quite fair if the diagnosis (finding the leak), flushing, and refilling took a couple of hours - or probably on the high side if he was in and out of there in less than an hour. $600 for a full refill is certainly not beyond the range of many charges these days.

Hopefully BayAreaAC out of Florida will chime in with his thoughts here - I held off answering thinking he would kick in here. He is a regular contributor to A/C and R22 questions here.
