You can also google the subject - there are opinions all over - the majority opinion seems to be that they are more suitable to 1 or 2 person residences or so uses where hot water demand is very infrequent like pool shower areas or guest houses, where a regular water heater would wasste a lot of energy keeping waster hot for days or weeks on end with no demand.

From an energy standpoint, unless you are in a cheap electricity area like the Columbia River basin or Quebec Hydro country, the cheaper gas fuel for a regular heater generally overcomes the instant-heat savings of an electric on-demand heater.
