Question DetailsAsked on 2/10/2013

Re-doing backyard. What order should I do things in. Need to remove deck, rework sprinkler lines, some landscaping and install a fence.

I live on a corner and my backyard is not fenced in. Looking to add privacy and make the backyard more useful. There currently is an elevated deck attached to the house in the backyard.
I would like to remove the deck, redo the landscaping where the deck was and in other sections of the backyard and install a fence to enclose the backyard for privacy. It is likely that I will also have to redo some of the sprinkler lines underground as the ranges will likelly change due to the fencing.

What order should I do this in? Also, who can I hire to remove the deck? I have a landscaper and will likely search Angie's for someone to install the fence.
Thanks for any help!

You said: "I would like to remove the deck, redo the landscaping where the deck was and in other sections of the backyard and install a fence to enclose the backyard for privacy." What's wrong with doing the work in that order? Sounds like the most logical sequence to me. ;~)

Just make sure the landscaping is not likely to be trampled by the fencers. Consult with the landscaper; there may be some details you will want to finish after the fence is up. A professional landscaper should be able to advise you about redoing the sprinkler lines.

Also check Angie's List to find someone to remove the deck and haul everything away. It's possible a fencing contractor will have people who can do this work.

Your questions are exactly what you should be thinking about when doing the type of work you describe. Below is a list of in the order they should be performed.

1. - Remove the deck and old fence.
2. - Remove underground sprinkler lines that are on the way of the new structures that you will be installing. That includes both new fence and new landscaping.
3. - Build the new fence
4. - Plan for your new landscaping layout (but do not install it yet).
5. - Prepare the sprinkler / irrigation adjustments based on the new landscaping
6. - Install any plants, mulch, and grass last

Planning ahead is important for efficiency. You can expect any efficient landscaping and sprinkler systems company would follow the above sequence of steps.
