Hemorrhoids, oddly enough, usually respond to some simple measures. Bedrest is important, as it redistributes blood away from the engorged vessels that form the hemorrhoids. Sitz baths; sitting 15 to 20 minutes in a good warm bath four times a day. A high fiber diet or daily fiber supplement is very important in preventing hemorrhoids.
If the area is very tender, getting worse or there is tissue protruding from the anal sphincter, seeking professional help is warranted. Hemorrhoids that 'prolapse,' form inside and them fall through the sphincter and won't go back in, can require surgery, as can hemorrhoid thrombosis where clot forms in the hemorrhoid. When these things happen, treatment at home is not likely to be helpful.
