Roof contractor wants 1/3 down to book date in Spring (7 or 8 months out), is that reasonable?

I contacted a roofer from Angie's List and he asked for $500 to put me in line for work to be done next Spring. I think 1/3 is way too much. If you change your mind or if he is too booked and you decide not to wait, good luck in getting back thousands of dollars. Hold on to your money!
