Should I pay 50% of a of a lawn installation "before the work starts"?

I'm about to contract a sod installation job. The installer is requiring 50% upfront.

Absolutely not. Any contractor asking for 50% up front is ridiculous. I may offer 10% so he knows I'm serious about having the work performed. Tell him when the job is about a fourth done, you'll give him another 25%. Why would he have a problem with that? If he says he needs it for "materials", (the sod), he can't manage his money if you need to pay him so he can buy sod. If he refuses to cooperate, there has to be someone else in your area capable of doing the work.
