Unless you need new siding, why ?

Painting your house will cost $1-2/SF typically unless it is in pretty bad shape, residing costs $6-10/SF typically, so there is no comparison in price.

If your siding is deteriorating, you have water damage in a number of locations in the wall, you intend to combine it with a major insulation project, etc - then residing might make sense.

New siding done right saves you on the cost of this one and the next three or four paint jobs, that is when and where your investment pays for itself. Next by adding insulation be hind your new siding you help to cut down on heating and air conditioning expenses, and that helps the payback speed up. You will also eliminate the need to replace rotted sections of wood, stop the on going touch ups, maintenance free is a life worth something too. Siding does not attract insects and wood peckers, and with a garden hose cleans up real quick. Want a free siding estimate in New York e-mail TheNewWindowMan@aol.com
