Depends on your philosophy of tipping, and on whether you think they did a specially good or careful job.

Generally, personal service providers have been tipped if they did a good job - either by the visit, or if regulars like favorite hair stylist, house cleaner, etc - maybe annually ner the end of the year.

Obviously, anyone who gave extraordinary service you can tip.

Tipping does not have to be cash - it can be home baked goods, box of candy, etc. For instance, we give a reasonable but not large cash tip to people like our garbage collector, along with a goody package of baked goods at year end. That also works well for people like the Vet, Doctors Office, Mailman, local fire station, local cop shop, etc who you either do not feel comfortable giving cash to or who (like the Mailman, fire, and police) are not allowed to take cash gifts.

Remember, tipping is not the only way to show appreciation - a call to their boss with a commendation for a job well done may be worth a lot more to them than a one-time tip, as that could contribute to a pay raise or promotion. A written commendtion letter means even more, as that will typically go into their personnel file and keep popping up in the future.

Also, for contractors, a good recommendation to friends and acquaintances needing similar services, and a good review on sites like Angie's List can be worth far more in the long run than a cash tip. If you give an excellent review, be sure to send a copy to them so they know about it. A recommendation letter they can show to potential clients is another very beneficial thing you can do to show your appreciation.
