If you think the painter did an above and beyond job I would say yes. It is not necessary but it shows you noticed and appreciated the job. It does not have to be huge, one kitchen I did about a year ago the owner gave each of my helpers $50. They still talk about her to this day and we were there for probably about the same amount of time as your job. I think it is more about the recognition than the amount. And she did not tip me as the owner which I think is proper, though I have been tipped even when I refuse it.
