Sweet, pungent, offensive odor, basement BR, going on for years

I thought the odor was more specific to the BR closet located in the corner opposite from the garage wall and not close to any HVAC vents but I’m not positive. I emptied the closet, cleaned it thoroughly (disinfectant, floor, walls, ceiling) but the sickly, sweet pungent odor persists. There is a wood stove in the room but it’s not a creosote smell. I keep a large bowl of charcoal in the room to help but it doesn’t eliminate it. Oh, and we did use an ionizer twice. It helped but the smell returned. There are no plumbing fixtures above, below or beside the room. The room is located below the living room on the SW corner of the house. Not sure how many years have passed but it’s been close to 10. We had new wood sub flooring installed, smell is still there, no worse, no better. I’m totally baffled and my only guess is that there is some kind of nest in the wall. Our seasonal temps range from 80-90F to low teens. We trap mice and use an organic spray for bugs. Help!
