Tech call on a 3 y/o Whirlpool fridge freezer not freezing.Saw light frost on tubing- said replace compressor $800?

I had replaced the relay, he did no other diagnostics, just looked inside the freezer (I had removed the panel. My unit costs $850 new! He said I should replace the compressor. He said Whirlpool is a great product...um 3 years old? The frost was on the upper right side tubing. No frost on coils, air blowing, just not cold enough. Should I check the seal? I just read about testing with a piece of paper. Second opinion?? HELP single mom, single income!!
