The first indicator is slack in the steering system. Jack the front of the car up and pull-push the tire back and forth with the steering locked. If it has play there is slack somewhere. It could be the tie rod ends, pitman arm, etc. There are several components to a steering system. Does the car "road walk" when you are driving, meaning it sways back and forth on the road and you compensate moving the wheel back and forth to keep it straight? If this is the case something is significantly worn or loose.

If you don't know the compnents to the steering system take it to a reputable shop for an evaluation. Some may even be willing to check it for free or just a small charge. The good ones do this to get you as a customer either then or in the future. It doesn't take long to look at and builds your trust in them. The shady ones will do it to find something to talk you into doing whether you need to or not. If in doubt, take your car to another shop for a second opinion.
