Toilet clogged and does not overflow but causes leak downstairs

So my toilet didn't want to flush and it clogged. It didn't overflow but when I went downstairs, the ceiling was leaking. I should add, there was no toilet paper or xxxx in the commode, just urine. The leak got worse until the toilet was unclogged. The toilet bowl never overflowed, all the water went back into the pipes causing water damage to the ceiling and sheetrock. What could have caused this? Also, the leak was in the living room but in two different places. In one location, the water was coming out brown.
