We have an intermittent clicking noise in or near the handle for the cold water at the bathroom sink

We have an intermittent clicking noise in or near the handle for the cold water when turning the water on or off at a bathroom sink. There don't appear to be any leaks. What could be causing the noise and what if anything should we do about it? Could this be a potential for leaks?
The sink has a faucet with separate handles for the hot and cold water.
