What is an average price range for refinishing a hardwood staircase?

We have a 65 year old house and just removed old carpet from the stairs. There is nice wood underneath, but it needs to be refinished. I am looking for an average price range for this type of work.

Sounds like you are looking for just the stair treads and risers - not the bannisters and railings or side kick boards, right ?

Depends a LOT on condition of the treads and risers now, whether one-piece treads or attached nose or such, how fastened down (screws or nailed or construction adhesive) and whether stained or painted and whether they need to be sanded or planed down to remove scratches or just refinished. Could run from (for entire staircase) about $2-3/SF (of board) for a simple recoat with clear coat (varnish or polyurethane) on up to as much as more like $10-15/SF for complete removal, resurfacing, and total shop refinishing and reinstall.

Depending on the tread/riser type of material, can be cheaper in many cases to just rip it out and replace with new pre-finished riser facade thick veneer and hardwood treads.
