What are the best brands of luggage?

I am shopping for the best brand of luggage to purchase as a gift. The luggage will be used for traveling by plane.

My suggestion - give a gift card instead, because choosing color, mix of types and sizes in a set, etc for another person sounds like an invitation to unhappiness.

Other than the aesthetic factors, a person might want capability of specifically handling dresses or suits like a folding dress or suitbag, might want the largest that will be accepted by their favorite airline or cruise line (either for checked or carry-on - and different airlines have different allowed sizes, especially foreign) or might want more smaller ones for easier handling, might want hardsize or softside or a mixture, wheeled or not, locking or not, etc.

For my money - Pelican makes the toughest but somewhat pricey, probably Bond Street for the nicest looking without going designer bags, Samsonite (especially fibearglass hard cases) for overall durability and quality at an affordable price.

Briggs and Riley - somewhat more expensive, BUT guaranteed for life. Mine is holding up very well with lots of travel by air. I have a backpack, a medium-sized roller case, and a 22" suitcase with wheels. All pieces fit well together to make moving through airports easier.
