What is the cost to replace a 5' x 3' sliding window?

I have some windows (slide up and down type) that need replacing. Have no idea
of cost. Any help?

Those are called single-hung windows if only the bottom half moves up and down, or double-hung if both top and bottom windows move up and down.

Cheapest box store units cost about $90-150, mid-range decent ones cost in the $150-250 range, highly energy efficient or fancier frame $250-350 purchase cost.

Installation depends on how well it fits the rough opening in the wall - if the person you are buying it from installs it too (so his responsibility to get right size), then a replacement installation should cost $100-200 per window WITHOUT custom painting of the frame.
