What is a fair down payment to give a roofing company?

I am replacing my roof and have turned to Angie's list for support. I read that Angie's list recommends only giving a third down payment to contractor. I have received 4 estimates and every roofer states 1/2 down payment on written estimates. So what should I do

50% down is fair. They have to purchase materials and guarantee their workers wages.

A safer way to handle the payment for materials would be for you to purchase the materials yourself, rather than giving the money to the contractor to buy materials.
It's possible you may be giving money to someone you will never see again....
Negotiate with the roofer to see if they will let you handle the materials payment that way.
Also, bear in mind that the contractor may get a discount on materials that an average Joe would not, so be sure to ask the roofer if they will let you pay for the materials using their discount.
