All tree companies should have both liability and workers comp. insurance. If you are seriously worried about damage to your property, ask how much the liability coverage is (generally you have a certificate from the insurance company sent to you directly via e-mail, FAX or US mail - do not accept a blanket sheet with out your name and property address filled in my the Insurance Company handed to you by an employee - just ask for them to call the office for you - then that person will know exactly what you want/need). Sorry for the run-on sentence.
Ask for removal strategy, options to the best one; exactly where the trucks and crane will be ideally placed.
YOU should be asked about your lawn watering system and your septic system - 3/4" plywood will, with out a doubt, protect your systems AND lawn.
If the lawn is pristine, and you don't want too much foot traffic, it may be worth going with a crane.
Most states don't have licensure - but hire a certified Arborist, it does make a difference.
Good luck
