Asphalt is priced by the ton - paving is priced by the square foot - so obviously the cost depends on whether you are doing a 1 or 1-1/2" overlay or a 3-4 inch full replacement. Click on the Home > Driveway link under your question and you will find a number of responses on driveway preparation, paving, sealing, installed cost, etc.

For hot mix, unless you are an experienced asphalt worker with the right equipment, enough manpower, and a small job, hot mix is not for you for a do-it-yourself job because "freeze-up time" runs from 1-2 hours. If you are looking for a do-it-yourself job you need cold-mix, which is readily handleable for 10-48 hours in proper asphalt placing weather (above about 50 degrees), and with a little propane torch heating to help it "flow out" better, can be used for a month or so after dumping.
