OK - weeding and shrub control are landscape maintenance, not lawn care - lawn care is mowing, raking fall and spring debris, fertilizing and weed and feeding, and maybe watering.

Landscape maintenance (or "gardening") can be done on a scheduled basis after an initial concentrated effort to bring everything up to snuff, or can be done on a periodic basis, which the contractor will quote you on based on his estimate of the hours needed to do the work.

Normal labor billing rate will usually be about $15-20/hr for seat-of-the-pants outfits staffed by high school kids, to more like $20-30/hr for professional companies.

A professional arborist to do tree trimming and hedge care and professional trimming (topiary and such) can run from $40 to as much as $250/hour depending on the person's skill and training (high end for a Japanese topiary artist, for instance), and on how ritzy an area the work is being done in. Gardeners in Tuscaloosa might charge $10-15/hour, whereas the same work in Beverly Hills or Chevy Chase or for rooftop gardnes in Manhatten might run $75/hour.
