What is my mother's maiden name?

1 Answer

1) ask her, if alive - ditto to your father

2) ask family members - and if you have any relatives you know of on your mother's side, they at least undoubtedly know - and likely to be same as your maternal grandparents' name if they both have same last name

3) look on your birth certificate - almost always lists mother's maiden name. Ditto usually on any hospital or doctor's Certificate of Birth and any Baptism certificate (done as an infant).

4) if you know where and when she was born or got married, obtain (easy in some states, harder in others unless you have Power of Attorney or are the Estate executor) a copy of her birth or marriage certificate or license

5) if you have her memorabilia, old letters, old school yearbooks of her's, names of people shown in photos written on back of photos, engraved jewelry which might date to her maiden days - look in them for her childhood name

6) check newspapers for your birth announcement - my have it

7) pay membership/search fee and check or one of the public information search sites (though be careful about giving them personal information - some are scams to obtain and sell personal information).

8) if you had a passport or visa when you were a child and still have it, likely to show parent's names including maiden name
