First, why Amana - same equipment as Goodman at $500-1000 more per unit. Second, just my opinion - I would not go with Goodman either - I would go with something which is not bottom of the pile. You can find some opinions from various contributors about brands, and ballpark price info and thoughts on replacing a system and energy/payback issues, in the Home > HVAC link, under Browse Projects, at lower left.

"Contractor grade" (meaning cheapest available usually) to lower-end standard equipment, minimum legal efficiency, commonly around $1000-2000 per unit (contractor billout rate including markup) - plus generally from sometimes as little as $500-1000 per unit to install, more commonly more than that. For lower end pair (or a combined unit) generally around $5000 is a good target number - less in cheap areas or with very cheap equipment, more in higher cost area and better equipment.

For reviews google with the brand name and model - there are several sites specializing in home applaince reviews - no comments on that model on Angies List that I remember, and not many thoughts on Amana either. Bear in mind AMana is not "Amana or even Maytag anymore - owned (with Goodman and other names) by Daikin Industries, out of Japan.

Another possibility, depending on where yuou are located, if in an area without real winters (rarely below about 30-40), a heat pump might be a better answer for you - like an A/C but flow is reversible to provide not only heat removal from the house in summer, but also energy removal from the outside air (until it gets cold, when electric or gas makeup heating kicks in) at much higher efficiency than a furnace. Can be, depending on local temps, as much as about 3 to even 4 times as energy-efficient (if in a place like LA for instance) as a furnace. But costs a bundle in supplemental heating energy if in an area with very high electric costs or where it commonly get below it bottom-efficiency temps.
