Question DetailsAsked on 10/12/2013

What specific make/model of exterior door lock for a NYC apartment would you recommend?

The building has an electronic outer door for the 5 unit building - this door hardware would be for our front door inside the hallway. I would like a door whose handle locks automatically behind me (without having to stop and turn a deadbolt) if I forget. I saw the Samsung SHS-3320 on Amazon - but other specific make/model would be helpful. Thanks!

Angie's List reviews contractors and personal service vendors, not products - your best bet might be so find reviews in a home improvement magazine or Consumer Reports. Clearly for your locale and for a multi-unit building where pEople might be buzzed in who should not be, you want a top name's high-security line - like Bosch, Schlage, Assa, Medeco, Kwikset.

Two things - the auto-locking feature can be dangerous - you might lock yourself out by accident. Also, for true security do not count on one lock - if you really want to have some good security, you want a high-security doorknob/lock PLUS a separate deadbolt higher up on the door, both to increase the time it takes for someone to gain entry, and also to increase the resistance to kicking in the door (which is the mode of entry in about 50% of breakins).
