Question DetailsAsked on 8/21/2014

What is a tactful response to an inconsistent travel agent, who books things at higher rates than was quoted to you

I am going on a cruise with my family and am working with a travel agent on the details. The agent found some local hotels for us to stay in the night before we board the cruise ship. The travel agent gave me an "approximate cost" for the hotel that included transfers from the airport to the hotel and then the hotel to the ship the next day. The price also included the hotel tax. I thought it was a great deal so I had the agent book that hotel for us. Afterward, when the agent sent an updated travel statement, the hotel was $100 more than she originally quoted us on. I questioned this with her by email and she said that she would "get back to me on this". It has been several days now and there has not been a response from the agent on the matter.

A lot of travel agent get caught with surprises too - we went to my daughter's college graduation a month or so ago and the motel tried to double the rate at check in because it was graduation time and they were overbooked - and the rate we reserved at was already double the normal rate !

I showed them the reservations with confirmation code confirming a certain rate and it shut them right up.

Our travel agent sends us a confirming itinerary with all the prices on it, as if it was final, for approval before she confirms the reservation "holds" she did in preparing the itinerary - have never had a problem other than the above - though have had rates go down here and there upon check-in.

I would drop her an eMail asking for status after it has been at least a week - may be the hotel chain is mulling it over, or they said no and she bumped it up to the hotel chain management without telling you and they have not gotten back to her yet.
