When you hire contractors, why do you pick one over the other?

So I am a roofing contractor. You are a home owner. You are hiring a contractor for some work on your home. You interview 2 or 3 contractors. What makes you choose to hire one contractor instead of the others?

Hey Katie, that article you linked may have been the wrong one. It doesn't really apply to my question.

I'm wondering why people make their buying decisions, not how consumers can protect themselves.

My reply is based on my personal experiences as a homeowner and a business owner. For me, it all boils down to the 'Know, Like, and Trust' model - at least for bigger ticket items (HVAC, roofer, remodeler, general contractor, etc.). I am more willing to do business or hire someone that I get to know, like, and trust (professional, knowledgeable in their skill set, products, etc.). Getting to 'know' someone does not necessarily have to be a long, involved process, but I do want to know more about the person and the company than merely the person's name on his / her nametag and the prices of their services / products. I have even paid a little more just because I got a better feeling from a certain person / company.

I truly believe that the 'Know, Like, and Trust' model works in a majority of the cases. In my business, we spend more time with the prospective customer than other companies. We do this before, during, and even after the sale / installation is completed. When they feel comfortable with us as human beings, then they feel more comfortable with us as a company. Then, they are more likely to recommend us to friends, family, and colleagues.

I ask questions and get several bids. I also ask those bidding on a project what questions I should ask others in an effort to compare "apples to apples." How the person interacts with me is important - do they take time to answer my questions, are they rushed, does it feel like a commercial, ... Does the person ask me questions in a non-judgemental way that makes me feel they want to meet my needs. I have had people wanting to bid on a job, but they want to go to my home when I'm not there, and then e-mail me or leave behind a proposal.
I also check Register of Contractors and BBB (and now Angie's List). I ask friends and family. I look at the bid and is everything laid out as to exactly what is being done. Finally, I ask for refernces and check also to see if there were a problem in the past, was it resolved satisfactorily.
