Question DetailsAsked on 4/29/2014

Where to have an antique frame restored in the Greater Boston area? What type of professional would do this work?

I recently inherited a framed painting that used to hang in my great-grandmother's house and was passed down to me through the family. The date on the painting is 1890, so it is approximately 125 years old. The frame has been damaged over time and I would like to have it properly restored. As far as I can tell, the painting is in good condition. It is a small painting (approx. 20 in by 10 in), but has sentimental value and I would like to be able to hang it in our house. The current condition of the frame does not allow for it to be hung. My question is twofold: 1) What type of professional would be best suited to do this type of work? I would want the work to be done carefully as it is very old, but still in a reasonable price range and 2) Are there any recommendations for the Greater Boston area? Any help would be appreciated!

I would ask local antique shops and art stores (ones selling art and frames, not galleries) if they repair antiques, AND for references, so the repair does not decrease its value unecessarily. In many cases the old frame is worth more than the painting !

You could also ask local art museums who they use to repair/rehab frames, if they do not do it themselves.
