Which is the better siding- vinyl or fiber cement board?

We are replacing siding on our mostly brick house. We are trying to decide between foam-backed vinyl siding and Hardie board.

A high grade of vinyl and installation is the best of bothe worlds, no maintance verses many law suits against cement board.

For my money - neither. One does not hold paint well, is easily damaged by impact and sun exposure and is a bear to waterproof joints and ends, the other is not waterproof at all and requires unusual care from a contractor to put on without breakage, and has the same joint leakage issues as vinyl.

If I were you I would take another look at your options, with a careful eye on commnets on the web, and long-term water infiltration issues.

If you do go with either one,, I would strongly recommend a good highly water resistant housewrap under it, because that is going to end up being your primary water infiltration barrier in a good portion of the wall, especially at windows, doors, and corners.

In my opinion James Hardie is the best to use. They have tested their product product over different situations and found better ways to have wood siding put on your home. The wood its self is water proof, fire proof, and can stand up to harsh conditions. You however do have to find the right person to install it though. Although i know come to realise that the vinyl siding companies are comeing out with vinyl siding that can with hold the elimates just as much as james hardie. You may want to check into a vinyl siding company called Norandex as well. If you are on a budget they are about 2,000 dollars cheaper on your standard home of about 20 sq. feet. If you find the right product for your climate and a good installer it shouldnt matter which company you chose because you will be happy with the product no matter what.
