Who builds carports in Silver Spring, MD?

We have uncovered parking at our house with lots of trees and consequently LOTS of bird mess. Shoveling out from the snow in the winter isn't pleasant either. We really don't have enough room to build a two-car garage without eating up a ton of our back-yard. We'd like to find someone to build a carport (not an ugly looking sheet metal and post or tarp covered aluminum frame structure). We'd like something made of wood, with a real roof and some but not too complicated. I'm having difficulty finding someone who builds carports. The deck and outdoor structure people say they don't build carports. The garage people don't build them either. Any ideas on where to look?

In addition to checking with your community's building code department and other things OG suggested, you might want to contact a company that specializes in mobil home (manufactured homes) . If there are trailer/mobil home parks in your area, there should be companies that construct and repair carports.

Hope that helps

In the fairly small town where I live, I'd stop by the Planning departmnt and ask some casual questions like:

do you have copies of the rules for buildings 'n structures on my property?are there any special rules for carports or are the the same as garages?how many carport permits do you issue per year?do you know of any of the businesses that are building them?

I realize most city/town government folks would resist offering a referral to a particular builder. But, if you get them into casual conversation, you might find them willing to point you to a shinning star. And, you could get some other info at the same time that would be useful down the road.

You'll have to let us know how it works for you.

We are out of Martinsburg, West Virginia and we are not a licensed contractor in Md., but we can be in about 15 minutes. We are a design and build general contractor and we can build anything. Our problem is coming to Silver Springs everyday for about 4 or 5 days to build it. The cost to run up and down the roads with fuel and time. However, if you are willing to pay fuel and travel time we could do the job for you. We are on Angies List under We Help You Build, inc. and you can go to our web site for more informaion and contact info. If we can help, let us know.

A general framing contractor or carpenter and a roofer should be able to team up to do this. Ideally a roofer with a general contractor or carpenters license. Also, most general contractors that do remodels would like this kind of job as a small filler job, particularly if you give them a couple of months to get it done, so they can use it for temporarily idled crews on other jobs.
