Sounds like either a bathroom toilet leak (smell coming through ceiling or around pipe penetrations), or maybe a stray took up residence in basement or crawlspace while the house was vacant. Rattle around to spook out any hiding cat or get an animal control contractor to look around - and check for any window or screened openingsor loose boards that are open or can be pushed aside by an animal - of course be absolutely certain animal is out before sealing off any entry point.

Many animal control shelters/pounds also have cat traps available (free or at nominal rental) which you can use to trap strays and take back to the shelter.
