best way to purchase and install a new water heater?

I need a new water heater and am considering purchasing and installing a water conditioner also. What are the best products to consider, and will an installer pick them up for me and install them?

Angie's List does not have a rating system for products - just contractors and vendors, so for brand name evaluations you will have to google for reviews on the different items and find ratings and reviews at sites like Consumer Reports.

An installer will pick them up and istall if that is what you specify when you contract with him/her - realize it will not be free - they will charge for the transit time, so if you have the means to move them to your house, or the store will deliver for free or maybe for $20-25, that will be cheaper for you.

Don't forget too if you want the installer to remove the old one as part of the job.
