Question DetailsAsked on 10/21/2019

can a faulty expansion tank contribute to a banging, ratcheting sound that lasts about 30 seconds

the system is a gas fired forced hot water baseboard system with 2 zones. The system is over 30 years old and continues to work until recently when the ratchetting sound has occurred. It only lasts about 30 seconds while the water is heating up. The sound is coming from a hot water pipe that is within 1 foot of the expansion tank. Could it be the expansion tank is faulty??
