Repainting generally runs about $5-10/SF of painted surface - so not too terrible if repainting outside only, if inside also then runs into bucks real quick when you figure all the square footage in shelves and drawers, all faces. This works out to about $25-50 per cabinet face for exterior only.

Refacing with hardwood veneer runs about $150-250/LF of cabinet being refaced, or about $30-50/SF.

New cabinets, installed, run ballpark about $50-150/SF, for comparison.

Therefore, painting and veneer are about in the same ballpark, so it comes down to mainly a question of what look you want.

Painting requires excellent prep to get a long-life job without risk of peeling, but is easier to repair if knicked or gouged. Veneer makes it easier to have a quality uniform appearance, but cannot wrap around sharp corners, so on cabinet doors with rounded edges it will coer only the faxes, with exposed door material (stained) on the edges, whereas paint can cover all surfaces.Veneer is also susceptibel to peeling if it gets wet, like on cabinet fronts in front of a sink.

With either option, if you have no pulls on the doors (you just grab the edge of the door or drawer to open) I would recommend door pulls or knobs to eliminate or limit the finger oil and fingernail scratching that occurs on doors and drawers from being opened.
