Here is an Angie's List article that pretty much answers that question. Insurance is certainly important, Worker's Compensation Insurance is critical to protect you from worker injury liability. Bonding in this case is vital if you put a significant amount of money down, maybe less so than for a lot of types of work as long as you have him sign over the materials to your ownership the minutes you pay for them AND get a lien release from the supplier.
