In all probability, the humming you hear is the motor running, but the drive belt that goes from the motor pulley around the drum to turn it broke or was thrown off the pulley. If dryer is electric (I would not do this with a gas dryer for fear of breaking the gas connection), if you tilt the dryer up while it is running (do on fluff cycle so does not get hot) and look underneath with a flashlight, you can usually see all the workings - the motor will probably be spinning happily away, and there will be a narrow (about 1/4-1/2" wide) fabric backed rubber ridged drive belt broken or not on the motor pulley.

Appliance Repairman can fix - of course, if you KNOW from looking that the belt is broken and you give your make and model number, then they should able to bring the belt with them - save a trip.

If that is problem, probably about $100 repair cost plus or minus about $25.
