since you say that you are in the southern part of California your seasons are likely like what we have in Tennessee. your winters asre sometimes cold. so for a 1100 sq. ft. apt. you will need a heat pump system, that type of system should provide you enough comfort in the cold season. the best way to go is a two station mini-split heat pump. two station means you will have two operating systems in one, with two thermostats to control two rooms. in other word your living space and your sleeping quarters will have their own control. Mini-splits require no ducting sandf are very cost efficient. they are a little more costly than your regular systems but the saving over time will make up the difference. if you go with a multi-zone mini you are looking about 3000.00 installed.

I have a 750 square foot, two floor condo in NJ with the cooling unit outside and heater inside and was quoted $7,000 which seems very high. I was expecting to be closer to $6,000.
