There is no central website to check this.

Have the contractor provide a copy of his certificate of insurance or of bonding. Some, especially for large jobs like a new home, will have one issued specifically for that job, but generally they just give you a copy from when they last renewed - like the one you get when you pay homeowners or auto insurance. That tells you they got the bill, not that they are actually still bonded or insured, so you need to call the insurance agent and bonding agent (usually different comapnies) to make sure it is still in effect.

Also ask the bond agent if the full amount of the bond is available, or if part has been committed to a claim on another job.
