That could require a pretty exhaustive answer, so since I am pretty busy right now, I am going to take the easy way out and refer you. Google "roofing contracts" and you will find lots of checklists and examples - I would start with the National Roofing Contractors Association link.

Choose from amongst contractors who have been in business at least a few years with a good reputation, and who are licensed, bonded, and insured. Build your list of potential contractors using reviews such as Angie's List, and word-of-mount from neighbors who have had their roof redone in the past couple of years. Also, check for membership in national or state roofing contrctors association, check online for Better Business Bureau complaints, and google their name (company and owner's names both) to see if they have a record of court cases or complaints against them.
