Question DetailsAsked on 3/24/2014

how much should it cost to repair garage door opener if there is a problem with belt?

We also want a key pad installed. Is it cheaper to get a new garage door opener? It is 12 years old

Key pad maybe $50-75 installed along with the repair. Belt repair or maybe just tension adjustment as needed, from probably $15 to 50 additional depending on whether belt is shot or just needs tension adjustment. I would get door springs checked and retensioned if needed, and the drive mechanism cleaned and lubricated, for about another $30 if done on same visit.

If opener has been opening door OK till now, no need to replace - a normal door opener should last 20 years or more if lubricated and cleaned every 5 years or so and not operated with broken door springs. A new one is going to cost you at least $250 and likely more like $300-400 for a decent one installed, so why replace before needed unless it is really groaning and grinding away.

Contractor you want to Search the List for is a Garage Door repairman/installer.
