If the coil has developed a leak, in some instances the leak can be soldered. Consider the age of the unit as well before investing in a repair as other expensive components may be next to fail.

Depends on make, model, size, age of model, materials it is made of (i.e stainless versus aluminum or steel alloy), ease of access and removal, etc -

Can run from a low of about $200 to over $1000 for the unit, and labor from $100 for simple, serviceable designs (a true rarity) to about $350 in bad cases.

Bear in mind (read the comments in Home > HVAC) that if your unit runs on R-22 (Freon) that gas is being phased out and cost is skyrocketing because of that and price gouging - some people are charging over $150/lb now (even though in bulk you can still buy it for $30-40/lb), with 3-4 lbs being a common filling amount - so if your unit is old you might consider the alternative benefits and costs of replacing the entire A/C unit now rather than a couple of years down the road, because in addition to the evaporator replacement you are looking at $300-600 in gas refill alone - a good chunk of a normal $2000-4000 A/C system replacement cost.
