You can start by checking the status of the contractor's license number at the website for the State Licensing Board. The website for the California State Licensing Board is below.

In California, a contractor must display his / her license number on all advertising material. This includes vehicle signage, business cards and newspaper adds.

If a license has been suspended or revoked, then that is an indication the contractor is not someone with whom you should do business.
