how much to find leak and replace evaporator coil in carrier 38ckc

I had 6 pounds of r22 put in last year and this year it is down by 2 pounds and the evaporator coil is all frozen up with water leaking. The diagnostics guy from a warranty company is certain that the leak is occurring in the evaporator coil and it needs to be replaced

Definitely sounds like a leak - and assuming an older unit the evaporator coil ("indoor" coil) is probably the most common leak location, due to corrosion of the mixed-metal coils being made today.

Pay attention to scamming and costs - even with home warranties the way they scheme it is frequently cheaper to just get a reputable contractor to do the repair - commonly $1000-2000 range, around $1500 commonly if not under warranty and normal sized A/C unit.

Here is a recent question about that FYI - lots more on the home warranty issue and the repair/total replace system issue can be found in the Homem > HVAC link under Browse Projects, at lower left.
