If you have a live one (you can hear it moving around), call a pest control service. They will work with you to trap it and seal the probable points of entry.

If you have a deceased one (have begun to detect an odor), hope that you will find evidence of the body so it can be removed. We were lucky once and were able to find the location of the animal in the attic from the evidence in the ceiling drywall. My husband was able to go into the attic and find the body fairly quickly.

Sometimes though, you have to weigh going into the walls to look against the possibility that you will tear several holes that will require repair and never find the critter. Try the pest control service.

We had to wait one out once and it took about 6 weeks for the smell to disappear.

For odors there is a deodorizing cleaning product available on the Net called NNZ that is very effective.

Assuming that it is live, place a trap up there. They usually like peanut butter as bait. Release it FAR from home, so that it won't fine it's way back - at least 5 miles, better yet 10. If possible you'll wish to find where it found or chewed it's way in. Rats don't need much - they can squeeze into a surprisingly small opening.

Good luck!
