Depends on what is wrong with it. If a floor shift manual and the problem is in the shifter, might run only a couple of hundred $. If an automatic, or a manual and the tranny has to be pulled, then you are talking probably about $250-400 for remove and reinstall alone, plus whatever the repairs cost - which can run from a few hundred for front and rear bearings and seals only, to almost as much as a new transmission for a total rebuild including replacing stripped gears - in the $1500-2000+ range.

Automatics, unless just an adjustment or band tightening/replacement (on those where that can be done without transmission disassembly) for around $250-400, generally tend to run $1000 plus and commonly $2000 range for a rebuild - generally cheaper to buy a rebuilt one and have it installed than to have yours rebuilt.
