Click on the Chimney link right below your question for several prior questions about costs fro removal and/or reconstruction from foundation of chimneys - both for roofline to cap jobs (usually the most weathered and deteriorated part) and for entire chimneys.

Your cost may be significantly different than the ballpark stated, depending on how common your type of chimney is in your area - i.e. clay brick, fired brick, stone, etc, and whether true chimneys are currently being built in your area, as in many areas (especially quake prone ones) true chimneys (as opposed to fake metal-flue fireplaces) are on the out both due to strength issues and cost.
