how are tree trimming service priced? Is it by height, diameter, type, hourly, or overall condition?

They will do it by the hour if you want - with the hourly rate dependent on the number of men needed in the crew, and whether they need a bucket truck, chipper and truck to dispose of the waste material, etc.

Your best bet is to have them come give a bid for the entire job - define what you want done, modify in the course of discussion with them, then have the job done as a single price. That is always best for you if you can define the scope of work up front, as it reduceds the risk to you of cost overruns.

If this is aesthetic trimming, be sure the company has a certified arborist on staff who will actually supervise the trimming, so it does not damage the tree and looks right. If just removal of dead branches or cutting off overhangs that are interfering with something, then an arborist is probaby not needed unless you are doing a lot of cutting.
